Synopsis:
The film’s opening shot is of the filmmaker Wang Wei squatting in front of the camera and introducing his village. He expresses his wish to intervene in village affairs and search for the truth with his video camera. The film shows Wang Wei to be active in the village’s public affairs. This film captures the hopeful and discouraging moments as he works to improve his village.
Director’s Statement:
Being a farmer myself, I know the hardships that my fellow villagers endure. I have my share as well. For Chinese farmers, life is an endless struggle sustained by a meager diet. Although we live and breathe in the 21st century, we live the lives of an earlier era. I tried to keep quiet while I filmed so as to record the villagers’ silent lives in the clamor of our “harmonious socialist society.”
About the Filmmaker:
Wang Wei was born in 1977 in Guanyinsi Wangjia Village in eastern China’s Shandong Province. He was one of the youngest participants of the Villager Documentary Project. Wang served in the military. He then returned to his impoverished village hoping to make a difference. He participated in the Villager Documentary Project in 2005 and completed his first short documentary Land Distribution. His long films are: My Village in 2006, My Village 2007 and My Village 2008.
